CREATED EQUAL: FROM BONDAGE TO FREEDOM IN JAMES CITY
On February 26, 2025, JCHS launched a new project, “Created Equal: From Bondage to Freedom in James City,” which explores the history of the James City community from the American Revolution to the present. It documents the essential role of African Americans in the founding of our nation, in eastern North Carolina and beyond. The project is supported in part with a grant from America 250 NC, an initiative by the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
"CREATED EQUAL" CONSISTS OF TWO NEW EXHIBITS:
Our digital exhibit features a story map and a digital archive of primary sources that chronicle the history of the Trent River Settlement that became James City.
Our traveling exhibit consists of seven retractable banners that can be installed indoors in secure locations. Please contact JCHS for more details if your organization would like to sponsor a display of the exhibit. The project is supported in part by a grant from America 250 NC, which is North Carolina’s commemoration of the United States’ 250th anniversary and is led by the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. America 250 NC has also featured the project on Its website commemorating America250NC
